A simple example of natural evaporative cooling is perspiration, or sweat, which the body secretes in order to cool itself.
This is exactly what dogs are unable to utilize to their comfort. So we simulate it with our Coool Dog coats.
The amount of heat transfer depends on the evaporation rate. For each kilogram of water vaporized 2257 kJ of energy are transferred. The evaporation rate in turn depends on the humidity of the air and its temperature. That's why your clothes get wet on hot, humid days: The perspiration cannot evaporate.
When the air temperature is high, your body's thermoregulation uses evaporation of its perspiration (sweat) to cool down. The cooling effect is directly related to how fast the perspiration evaporates. This is what a dog lacks.
In other words, we, the humans, play the role of thermoregulation by dressing our dog with a Coool Dog coat on a hot day. Perspiration then works very similar to ours.
But the air that affects comfort is not the air where the thermometer and humidity meters are located. It is the air that is touching one's body. As that portion of air is warmed by body heat, it will rise and be replaced with other air. By moving the air away from one's body faster, as with a natural breeze or a fan, the sweat will evaporate faster, making perspiration more effective, i.e., you feel cooler.
This is where your dog has the right idea: He keeps walking around, which is now comfortable.
The rate at which perspiration can evaporate also depends on how much moisture is in the air and how much moisture the air can hold. A dry, hot day is better than a very warm, moisturous day.
* At 32°C and 15% relative humidity, air may be cooled to nearly 16°C.
* At 40°C and 15% relative humidity, air may be cooled to nearly 21°C.
* At 32°C and 50% relative humidity, air may be cooled to about 24°C.
